A reason for exclusion from this doctoral course is the fact that the candidate has applied for the doctoral course with curricular part, given the scientific incompatibility of applications for the two strands.

Doctoral Degree in Law

Field of Knowledge: Legal Sciences

Speciality Areas:

  • Private Legal Sciences;
  • Public Legal Sciences;
  • General Legal Sciences.
The 3rd Cycle Studies programs of the School of Law of the University of Minho integrate a PhD course in Legal Sciences. This course aims to develop research capabilities and provide solid and advanced training for legal practitioners, researchers and teachers. It is divided into three main areas of expertise: Private Legal Studies, Public Legal Studies and General Legal Sciences.

The Doctorate in Legal Sciences does not have a curriculum component. The doctoral research is done with tutorial guidance of a mentor, culminating with the delivery and the respective oral defence of the thesis. At this moment, more than 50 students from Portugal and abroad are enrolled in the PhD Course in Legal Sciences.

Those that may apply to a study course leading to the PhD degree in Legal Sciences are (according to 128º article from the Minho University Academic Regulation):

a) The holder of a Master's degree or legal equivalent;

b) Holders of a degree, an academic or scientific curriculum that is recognized as attesting the capacity to carry out this cycle of studies by the Scientific Council;

c) Holders of an academic, scientific or professional curriculum that is recognized by the CC of the UOEI, as attesting the capacity to carry out this cycle of studies.

The recognition referred to in subparagraphs b) and c) above refers only to the access to the PhD in Legal Sciences and does not confer its holder with the equivalence to the Bachelor or Master degree, or the right to its/their recognition.
