Having begun my undergraduate studies for the first time, how and when should I enrol for the academic year?

Enrolment for students who are beginning their undergraduate law studies for the first time occurs in mid-September, during the period defined by the DGES. This information appears in due course in the academic calendar. Enrolment occurs in person in the computer labs on campus at the University of Minho, with support from Academic Services (Serviços Académicos) and the UMinho Student Association (Associação Académica da Universidade do Minho).

 

When and how can I submit an application for the undergraduate degree at the University of Minho through Concursos Especiais para Acesso ao Ensino Superior nos Cursos Ministrados na UMinho?

The following are special competitions for access to higher education:

  1. The competition for those over 23-years-old, who take exams that evaluate their capacity for university education;
  2. Competition for holders of middle, higher education and post-secondary courses (Concurso para titulares de cursos médios, superiores e pós-secundários).

 

Those interested in applying for undergrad studies at UM through these special contests should consult the regulation available at the Portal Académico of UMinho: alunos.uminho.pt> Regulamentos> Acesso/Ingresso.

 

  1. Those over 23 years old

You can access university education through exams that evaluate your capacity for higher learning or through a preparation course (Curso de Preparação para a Frequência do Ensino Superior).

 

Who is this special contest for?

Those who are/have:

  • Over 23-years-old;
  • Not title-holders of a higher-education degree;
  • Have taken the special exams offered at UMinho that evaluate capacity for higher education;
  • Satisfied the prerequisites established by the institution or course in question.

 

Where can I obtain information about submitting an application for the competition for those over 23 years old?

Consult the UMinho academic portal at http://alunos.uminho.pt and the DGES website at www.dges.mctes.pt> estudantes> acesso ao ensino superior> concursos especiais> Maiores de 23 anos.

Besides consulting the above page, you can rely on the access support office (Gabinete de Apoio ao Acesso) to obtain more information or clarifications about access for those over 23-years-old.

b) Competition for holders of middle, higher education and post-secondary courses (Concurso para titulares de cursos médios, superiores e pós-secundários).

 

Who are the students who can access this special competition?

Those who have completed studies beyond their undergraduate degree (Licenciatura) or an integrated program that led to a Master's degree.

 

When and how should I apply and enroll in the academic year having entered via Concursos Especiais para Acesso ao Ensino Superior nos Cursos Ministrados na UMinho?

The Regulamento dos Concursos Especiais para Acesso ao Ensino Superior nos Cursos Ministrados na UMinho regulates this information. This regulation is available on the academic portal (see alunos.uminho.pt) and contains details regarding applications and enrollment.

 

How and when can I apply for an undergraduate degree (Licenciatura) at UMinho via the reentrance procedure, degree switching or transferring?

The student should see the Regulamento dos Regimes de Reingresso, Mudança de Curso e Transferência nos Cursos Ministrados na UMinho for the academic year during which he or she plans to apply. The Regulamento is available on the academic portal (alunos.uminho.pt> Regulamentos> Acesso/Ingresso). The application period typically lasts from July to August.

 

How and when should I apply during the academic year if I have interrupted my undergraduate (Licenciatura) studies?

Students who were already enrolled in the same degree program or an antecedent program at UMinho are eligible to request re-entrance. These students' enrolments should abide by the deadlines posted on the academic calendar (available through alunos.uminho.pt> calendários/horários> calendário escolares).

 

Who are the students who can request a transfer or change of degree program?

  1. Those who are or have been enrolled in a university degree at one of the country's universities without concluding their studies;
  2. Those who are or have been enrolled in a degree program at a foreign university or other institution legally defined as offering higher education in the country in question, having finished it or not.

 

When and how should I enrol in the program change or transfer?

These students' enrolments should abide by the deadlines posted on the academic calendar (available through alunos.uminho.pt> calendários/horários> calendário escolares).

 

When and how can I apply for the undergraduate degree (Licenciatura) at UMinho via International Students (Estudantes Internacionais)?

International Student

There are two ways to apply for UMinho as an international student:

  1. If you are not a citizen of the European Union, and have not lived in Portugal for two uninterrupted years or more, and you have finished your secondary or middle  education in your country of origin you can apply through the Concurso Especial de Acesso e Ingresso do Estudante Internacional during one of the two application periods (the dates are available at www.uminho.pt> estudar> estudantes internacionais).

For additional information about the entry exams for each degree program, calendars and openings, please access the academic portal, where you will also find the application form, at alunos.uminho.pt/Modules/Avisos/ViewAviso.aspx?na=215.

2) If you are currently in a degree program at a university that is outside the European Union, you can apply through the transfer process for students who study at a foreign university. The application period in this case runs from July to August. More details will become available when possible at the website www.uminho.pt > estudar > estudantes internacionais.

ENROLLMENT

At the time of a first enrolment in a UMinho degree program, the student will receive a document with his or her login and password to access his/her personal page in the academic portal, Blackboard page and university email account.

 

When and how should I enrol in the new academic year if I am already a UMinho undergraduate student who was enrolled in the last academic year?

The enrolment period for students who were already enrolled in undergraduate degrees in law during the past academic year is published in the academic calendar for the following academic year, accessible through the academic portal (alunos.uminho.pt> calendários/horários> calendário escolares). The Academic Services (Serviços Académicos) of UMinho handles all enrolment.

 

I am already a student in the law school and have questions about enrolment through the Secretaria Eletrónica. How can I get answers?

What is part-time enrolment?

Part-time students are those who in each academic year complete a minimum of 40% and a maximum of 60% of the ECTS credits for which he or she can register in a full-time program.

 

How can I enrol in a part-time program?

The student can request part-time enrolment at the moment of registration.

You can ask for clarification of any matter related to enrolment through the Academic Services (Serviços Académicos) da UMinho, available at graduacao@saum.uminho.pt.

 

When and how can I enrol in elective courses (Unidades Curriculares Isoladas)?

Registration requests should be addressed to the Academic Services (Serviços Académicos) of UMinho on a specific printed form up to 15 days after the semester begins.

 

When and how can I enrol in elective courses when I still haven't finished the degree program for which I am registered and the electives are from a different program?

A student who is enrolled in a given program of study can sign up for electives from a different program, within a limit of 15 credits (ECTS). And a student who needs up to 30 credits (ECTS) to graduate can sign up for electives from the next-highest cycle of studies, as long as he or she does not enrol in over 60 credits (ECTS) over the length of his or her studies. 0000

 

I owe UMinho tuition payments. Can I enrol?

University students are to pay a tuition fee, set every year by each institution. Failure to pay this fee leads to: the invalidation of all academic credits undertaken during the academic year, suspension of enrolment, and suspension of access to scholarship funding until the payment of debts along with the accumulated interest.

 

Does UMinho have some debt-payment plan?

Yes, and it is governed by Order RT‐45/2015, accessible through the academic portal at alunos.uminho.pt> regulamentos> outros. Students can receive answers to their questions at propinas@saum.uminho.pt.

 

Can I cancel my enrolment?

UMinho can unilaterally cancel enrolment under the following circumstances:

  1. A student's failure to pay tuition fees;
  2. When the degree cycle is unavailable.

2. You can request cancellation up to 30 days after enrolment, or, in the case of a doctoral student that applied for financial aid scholarships, up to 5 days after learning of the financing institution's decision.

3. The cancellation relates to that academic year.

4. Cancellation of registration frees a student of the obligation of paying outstanding tuition instalments.

5. Cancellation determines that the corresponding registration does not count for the purposes of the statute of limitations.

6. If the student plans to continue a degree program at the same level in the following year, he or she can request reenrolment.

MATTERS RELATED TO DEGREE PROGRAM OPERATION

Where are the class schedules posted?

On the academic portal via alunos.uminho.pt> calendários/horários> horários.

 

How can I access a detailed syllabus that accounts for grading?

The class's syllabus, which will account for its content, recommended readings, teaching method and grading system, should be available on the Blackboard platform (elearning.uminho.pt) up to 15 days after the semester's beginning.

 

Where can I see the instructors' office hours?

They should publish their office consultation hours on the Blackboard platform (elearning.uminho.pt) at the start of each semester.

 

How can I see my grades?

Each class coordinator is to publicize grades via Blackboard.

 

How can I opt out of an exam?

Students can opt out of written or oral exams by communicating their decision at some point between the beginning and end of the exam.

For written exams, we require a written declaration of cancellation.

 

How can I see my graded exam?

After scoring, each student is to receive access to the exam in question, corrected and graded, along with the grading criteria, in the form of a consultation session, with a time and day arranged by the instructor, up to the seventh day after the posting of grades, and always up to two days before the oral exam.

The student should read article 99 of the Regulamento Académico.

 

How can I appeal or challenge the grading of a final exam?

Challenges are to be handed to the class coordinator, within a deadline of two days after consultation of the exam.

The student should see article 100 of the Regulamento Académico.

 

How many days in advance must oral exams be scheduled?

Two.

 

Do exams coincide?

The law school's Conselho Pedagógico is to ensure that exams for students in the same academic year or in consecutive years do not coincide.

What are the tuition fees?

Each academic year an Order from the Rector is emitted with the tuition fees, expiration dates, payment types, registration fee and academic insurance for that same year.

 

I am a student on a financial aid scholarship/bursary. Do I have to pay tuition?

How and where can I obtain a declaration of enrolment?

The academic portal: alunos.uminho.pt (you must log in)> informação pessoal> declaração de inscrição. Next, follow instructions that state the page which contains the mentioned declaration and validate your digital signature.

 

Where and how can I obtain a certificate or attestation?

To obtain a certificate of:

  • degree completion;
  • detailed degree completion;
  • completion of an integrated Master's-level first degree course;
  • courses completed;
  • programmes and course loads,
